WAS DRIVEN TO DO
This isn’t the first time Isuzu UK have helped a small business to grow. Back in 2015 we teamed up with Jimmy’s Iced Coffee to get them on the road and become the brand it is today. It all started 10 years ago when Jimmy’s Iced Coffee came on to the scene, a young start-up company with big dreams to get their delicious Iced Coffee out there for all to enjoy.
But as a small start-up company, they needed some help to get their distribution into gear; a way to transport their Iced Coffee to sample on the streets of London and that is when Isuzu UK decided to get involved. To help drive Jim’s venture, we lent him an Isuzu D-Max to help store iced coffee in the back whilst spreading the word and get the produce out there. Jimmy’s Iced Coffee added branded decals and took to the streets and the rest, as they say…is history.
Jump forward to 2021 and Jim no longer needs his Pick-up because the product is now sold in most top retailers across the UK including M&S, Waitrose and Tesco.
We’re so proud of what Jim and his crew have achieved and are delighted to have played a part in their history. We had a catch up with Jim himself to reminisce about the good old days when his venture took off from the back of an Isuzu D-Max.
HOW DID YOUR JOURNEY WITH ISUZU KICK START?
I went on Radio 5 live for a business chat up in London back in the day and was interviewed alongside a representative from Isuzu.
When off air I asked Isuzu if they wouldn’t mind lending me an Isuzu pick up for my business, you’ve certainly got to have guts when it comes to asking a favour when you’re starting up a new business. I couldn’t believe it when Isuzu agreed, and delivered me a new Isuzu D-Max which I wrapped and used as a promotional wagon.
WHAT DID YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR ISUZU D-MAX?
Well, we were used to driving a Suzuki Wagon R, so the literal ‘step up’ into the D-Max was a great one! Automatic, amazing ride height and perfect blend of comfort, style and utilitarian capacity made it a great truck for our business.
WHAT DID YOU USE YOUR ISUZU FOR?
We used it as a moving billboard once it had been wrapped and we even filled the back up with ice and Iced Coffee and hit the streets of London to sample product. It really was an epic bit of kit.
WHEN DID YOU BECOME BEYOND ‘ONE MAN AND A VAN’?
It was about three years into the business that we started to grow. We had landed a big listing with Tesco and we realised we were a proper company. I was still tearing around like a lunatic, but it did feel Jimmy’s was going somewhere from then on.
DO YOU HAVE ANY WORDS OF WISDOM FOR ANYONE ENTERING THE DRIVEN COMPETITION?
Good luck in the competition for starters! Secondly, make sure you’ve got it. All of it. The whole business, the whole thing, inside you. At the early stage, it’s similar to having a baby. It needs 24 hour loving, care and attention. It’s a beautiful thing but my word it’s tiring and all consuming. Finally, Keep Your Chin Up, you’ll need it for those long nights when it’s just you up working on a spread sheet or some crazy marketing plan!
HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN ISUZU GOT IN TOUCH AGAIN TO ASK YOU TO SUPPORT THE ISUZU DRIVEN COMPETITION?
It was so great to hear that they wanted to offer the same support for another start-up company.
It’s rare you come across a company who really cares and listens to its customers and what they can achieve with a little boost. I am so thankful to Isuzu for giving us the truck, it gave us confidence to do what we did as we felt we were believed in. That’s a really cool thing. Isuzu, you rule.
