WHAT IS BRITAIN’S BEST SERVICE STATION?

WHAT IS BRITAIN’S BEST SERVICE STATION?

Whether you’re hauling livestock or heading to a construction site or going on a family holiday, drivers know the value of a good motorway service station.

Service stations sometimes have a mixed reputation, often viewed simply as a place to refuel, get snacks or simply a spot to relax. However, according to our latest research, it appears that perception is changing.

Research suggests that motorists are becoming more selective about where they stop and are actively planning to do so more than a spontaneous stop out of necessity.

NOT JUST A QUICK BREAK

The survey of 2,000 British drivers found that cleanliness and hygiene is the single most important factor when it comes to service stations. More than half of motorists (55%) said clean facilities were their top priority with nearly half placing importance on hygienic toilets and ample free parking.

But for today’s drivers, the practical necessities don’t appear to be enough anymore. Service stations are increasingly being sought out for their quality food, welcoming atmosphere and a chance to stretch their legs somewhere. With additional heightened importance, placed on locally sourced produce. Interestingly, almost half of those asked stated they have left a service station because it failed to meet their expectations.

At the top, Gloucester Services has earned a loyal following thanks to its farm shop and locally sourced food with strong links to regional producers.

Behind Gloucester Services is Tebay Services on the M6. Tebay is family-owned and rooted in the farming community and has built a reputation around fresh produce and great quality meals and a connection to the local landscape.

Other highly rated stops include Beaconsfield Services on the M40, known for its nature views and Wetherby Services on the A1(M) offering everything from dog-walking facilities to EV charging and shower facilities.

Essentially, the survey results show a commonality: British motorists’ most favoured service stations are dependent on whether the experience feels less like a motorway stop and more a welcoming experience.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FARM SHOPS

Farm shops seem to be increasingly popular among British tourists.

Despite motorway service stations typically being filled with fast food and simple convenience stores, it seems drives now search for locations that have local produce from local suppliers – which is likely great news for Britian’s farming community.

Service stations such as Gloucester have shown that there is demand for fresh, locally sourced products.

KEEPING THE WORKFORCE MOVING

For many Isuzu D-Max owners, motorway service stations are a familiar part of the working week.

Whether travelling, visiting customers or delivering equipment, countless hours are spent on the road each year.

Drivers typically visit on average 25 service stations annually, so finding a reliable and comfortable place to stop can really make a difference on a journey.

With electric vehicles become more increasingly common, the experience becomes even more important as EV drivers typically spend longer at service stations while charging which means comfortable facilities, great food and clean surroundings are increasingly seen as more valuable and ideal.

THE BEST OF BRITISH ROADSIDE HOSPITALITY

Simply put: drivers remember those service stations that make their journeys easier and more enjoyable.

Clean facilities and reliable parking remain arguably the most important factor but the presence of a farm shop stocked with local produce and a scenic landscape seem to be what Britain’s motorists are increasingly favoring over the basics at service stations.

For those travelling relentlessly in an Isuzu D-Max, knowing where to stop can be as important as knowing where you’re going.
